How long will I have to stay in hospital?

A.

Overnight.

 

 

Q.

When will I be able to bend my knee?

A.

Straight Away.

 

 

Q.

When will I be able to put weight on my knee?

A.

Straight Away.

 

 

Q.

When do I expect to have full recovery and use of my knee.

A.

Walking without support (i.e. crutches) after 2 weeks. Back to sport at about 3 months.

 

 

Q.

How long should I stay off from work?

A.

Physical work - Two to four weeks.
Sedentary work - A few days.

 

 

Q.

Will I require any physiotherapy after leaving hospital?

A.

Yes, over a period of about 6 weeks.

 

 

Q.

Will I require walking aids, i.e.. crutches/stick? If so, for how long?

A.

Only for the first week or so.

 

 

Q.

When will I be able to drive?

A.

After 2 weeks (depending on which leg, manual or automatic car etc.)

 

 

Q.

When can I recommence sporting activities?

A.

Non-contact (eg. tennis, aerobics) - 3 months Contact (eg. soccer, rugby) - 6 months

 

 

Q.

Are there likely to be post-operative complications?

A.

Complications after ACL reconstruction are similar to arthroscopy. There may be some persistent swelling, slight loss of mobility and infection. Further information can be obtained through discussion with your surgeon.
